The Haworth Art Gallery houses the finest collection of Tiffany Art Glass in public hands outside the United States of America. The collection of over 140 pieces consists of mosaics, tiles and over 70 superb examples of Favrile glass vases. The connection between Tiffany and Accrington was Joseph Briggs. Accrington born and bred, Briggs emigrated when he was only 17 and rose to become the General Manager of the Tiffany studios in New York. He never forgot his native town and donated this stunning collection to Accrington in 1933. Set in Haworth park, with wonderful views of green hills, the beautiful gallery is a fine example of the Edwardian-Tudor style architecture. The Haworth offers an excellent collection of mainly 19th century oil paintings and water-colour drawings, plus a lively programme of exhibitions, workshops and concerts. Admission is free but donations are welcome. Improvement works are expected to be taking place from January to April 2000 - please call to check opening hours.
